Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the methyl cycle. MTHFR is a defect in this specific MTHFR gene that causes the defect in the MTHFR enzyme.

Normally the function of the MTHFR enzyme is to convert folic acid into its active form methylfolate, but this MTHFR mutation only allows the enzyme to convert 40-70 percent. If you are suffering from MTHFR then your body is not converting folic acid into methylfolate.
